225 People Celeberate May Day On The Commons in Ithaca in Support of Immigrant Rights
A vibrant crowd of people from throughout Tompkins County and local educational institutions excitedly gave their support to the contributions immigrants have made to the history of this country.

Tompkins County Distinguished Youth Successfully Urge County to Take A Stand on War on Iraq
Don & Peter Quinn-Jacobs were given the Tompkins County Distinguished Youth Award for their 4 years of community service with the Ithaca Peace Vigil, which meets every Wednesday morning from 8a-9a on Aurora St. (in front of Madeline's Restaurant.) When accepting the award in August, Peter said to the Legislature, "...the best award would be passing this resolution." And now it's happened (see news story to the right). So the Feds will be hearing from Tompkins County on Iraq.
Community Activist, Gino Bush, Implores Board of Public Works
At October 11th Board of Public Works (BPW) meeting, community activist Gino Bush, the adult mentor for Ithaca High School's Circle of Recovery class, implores the Board to move on renaming State Street after Martin Luther King, Jr. The campaign to rename the street is now ten months old and is very controversial. The BPW may vote on the issue at its Wednesday, 11/1 meeting at 4:45 p.m.

Ithaca-area activists stand outside Target to draw attention to Target's continued use of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) in its products. Companies including Wal-Mart, Nike, Microsoft, Ikea, H&M and Johnson &
Johnson are all phasing-out PVC in products and/or packaging. However,
Target has refused to do the same, although it has been under pressure from
more than 60 environmental organizations for more than six months.

The Burns' Sisters Inspire Over 100 Activists to Take A Stand for Single-Payer/Universal Health Care
Over 100 people gathered on The Commons, Tuesday, September 26th, as the first part of a day of events designed to persuade our next Governor to spearhead single-payer/universal health care in the State of New York. Folks on The Commons marched up the hill for a gathering of over 200 people in front of Bailey Hall in front of the gubernatorial debate. Nagasaki Remembrance, Ithaca Commons, August 9, 2006
An Ithacan participates in a Day of Remembrance of the horrific bombing in Nagasaki in 1945. The day featured a participatory art installation, vigil, march and film on the anniversary of the atomic bombings of Nagasaki, Japan in 1945 and was sponsored by the Ithaca Chapter of A Global Call to Action.
Also remembered were the victims of nuclear weapons and in calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and an end to the current war and to nuclear proliferation.

Demonstrators Gather in Ithaca to Protest Violence in Middle East
August 1--About 30 demonstrators gathered at Clinton and Meadow Streets in
Ithaca on August 1 to demand an immediate end to bombing and missile
strikes by Israel and Hezbollah and and for an immediate cease fire
in Lebanon and Gaza. The group protested the U.S. policy of opposing
an immediate cease fire and expressed its sorrow for civilian losses
on both sides of the border. The group called for solidarity with the
peace movement within Israel and support of the thousands of Israeli
demonstrators who oppose their government's policies and military
actions.

400 People Gather on The Commons on May Day to Demand Rights for Immigrants
Students from Beverly J. Martin Elementary School, along with students from Cornell University, Ithaca College, Tompkins-Cortland Community College, and Lehman Alternative School attend a rally on The Commons saying "No Human Is Illegal" in this national day of recognition for the importance that immigrants mean to our nation and economy.
