The SWARM...
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Street Renaming Committee appears to have been successful in stemming the possibility of the Board of Public Works taking up the "generic process" first before dealing with the immediate question at hand: renaming State St. after Dr. King. BPW Commissioner Ray Schlather appeared to speak well against the conflation of a generic process with the issue of State St and was echoed by Jennifer Dotson (correct if wrong, Jennifer). No one on BPW spoke otherwise. (Ith. Journal article with quotes found at http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060209/NEWS01/602090307/1002

It was left up in the air about when a vote on renaming State Street would take place. It did seem to be consensed by the BPW that Public Comment (written) would be accepted through the end of the month of February.
-----------------------
While the Board of Public Works was meeting, national Urban League President, Mark Morial, was speaking at Cornell (Morial is also former Mayor of New Orleans). From the Ith. Journal article comes the following:

Ithaca resident Eldred Harris said Morial's five points [Empowerment Agenda” that covers education and youth, economic empowerment, health and quality of life, civic engagement and civil rights and racial justice.] were relative to local issues, such as the debate over renaming State Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Street. Harris asked for Morial's views on the notion that streets named after the late Civil Rights activist were thereafter blighted.

Morial said that he has seen such cases where those streets were blighted, but due to negative retaliation. He said renaming the street provides a chance for the city to do more such as develop an economic inclusion plan or street revitalization plan.
